Professor Herman Terryn from the VUB’s research group SURF and the Department of Materials and Chemistry MACH, has been nominated as Honorary Professor at the University of Science & technology Beijing (USTB), China, for a period of 5 years.


He has been invited to participate in the Materials Genome Engineering “111 Yinzhi” Platform at the USTB in China. The “111 Yinzhi Programme” was established in 2006 in China to establish platforms at different universities and in different disciplines to stimulate collaborative research between Chinese and foreign researchers. On each platform, 10 to 15 renowned foreign professors in their discipline are invited to join. 


The topic on which Professor Terryn will be working is Materials Genome Engineering, in which corrosion and protection is a major part. The Platform was started in 2016 and will run until 2021. With this honorary position, Professor Terryn will be invited to visit the University of Science & Technology Beijing each year to give lectures, advise students and attend meetings.  The timing of the visits and their contents will be determined according to mutual availability and interests.  The platform can always be renewed, depending on the outcomes of the research collaboration - i.e. joint publications, co-organised meetings, co-advised students. 


The University of Science & Technology Beijing (USTB) was founded in 1952 from a combination of five former colleges. In 1997, USTB was selected into the first tier of universities for China’s 211 Project, which involves the delopment of 100 world class universities in 21st Century China.
