A team of researchers from VUB and ULB, including VUB scientists Steven Goderis and Matthias Van Ginneken, will be heading out to the Princess Elisabeth station in Antarctica next winter, where they will collect micrometeorites to get a better insight into our solar system. The composition of these meteorites suggests that there are still many asteroids that are unknown and yet to be discovered. The research is part of the BELAM project.
“To learn more about planets, asteroids and comets, lots of unweathered micrometeorites are needed, large enough to analyise their chemical and isotopic composition,” says Goderis. This way, the research team can map out where the extraterrestrial dust comes from and get a better understanding of our solar system.
