Dit voorjaar reikte de VUB tien eredoctoraten uit aan dertien mensen. Rector Caroline Pauwels, die zelf een eredoctoraat aan de UCL ontving, legde in de aanloop hiernaar een verband tussen cijfers, data, onderzoeksresultaten en kritisch denken. 10 honorary doctorates awarded to 13 people
Swedish statistician Hans Rosling, who died in 2017, wrote with his son Ola and daughter-in-law Anna Rosling Rönnlund the bestseller Factfulness. Karine Chemla (France) is a historian of mathematics, Freddy Van Oystaeyen is a pioneering Belgian mathematician, and mathematician Padmanabhan Seshaiyer (US) is above all a pioneer of better STEM education. Brian Durie is a world authority in multiple myeloma and is, with his wife, Susie Durie, the founder of the International Myeloma Foundation. Dutch physicist Robbert Dijkgraaf is a well-respected science communicator, and political cartoonist Gerard Alsteens (GAL) shows his view of his title on the next page. On World Press Freedom Day, VUB and ULB presented honorary doctorates to two journalists: Russian Elena Milashina and Belgian Rudi Vranckx. On 15 May, Flemish universities honour important figures from the South. VUB’s honorary doctorate goes to the Cuban minister for higher education, professor José Ramón Saborido Loidi.
